Contact angle measurement, mastered

GBX Scientific instruments measure how a liquid wets a surface — the contact angle — and turn that measurement into reliable surface energy data for research, quality control and product development.

What is contact angle measurement?

When a drop of liquid rests on a surface, the angle formed between the drop and the surface reveals how strongly the two interact. This angle — the contact angle — is the most direct indicator of a surface's wettability.

A low angle means the liquid spreads and wets the surface; a high angle means it beads up and repels. Coatings, polymers, glass, metals, textiles and electronics are all qualified this way, whether the goal is adhesion, printing, cleaning or hydrophobic performance.

From a single static measurement, GBX Scientific instruments extend to dynamic advancing and receding angles, surface free energy calculations and drop shape analysis — one platform for the full wetting picture.

Static contact angle

The resting angle of a deposited drop — the baseline reading of surface wettability.

Dynamic contact angle

Advancing and receding angles measured as the drop grows and shrinks, revealing hysteresis and surface heterogeneity.

Surface free energy

Calculated from a series of reference liquids, it predicts how coatings, inks and adhesives will behave on your material.

Drop shape analysis

Automated curve fitting of the drop profile for accurate, repeatable results on every sample.

The instrument range

Every instrument in the range combines precision optics, computer-controlled liquid dosing and analysis software in a compact benchtop design.

Contact angle goniometer

The core contact angle station: high-resolution camera, precision dosing and analysis software for static and dynamic contact angles on any solid sample.

Surface energy analyser

Extended configuration with multi-liquid dosing for surface free energy determination across polar and dispersive components.

Software and analysis

Automated drop shape analysis, session-based measurements and exportable reports, with methods for Young, Owens-Wendt and other established models.
